AU Background: Sheik was originally the alter ego of Princess Zelda, a disguise that she used to evade Ganondorf while waiting for the Hero of Time to awaken. Trained in the art of stealth by Impa, Zelda/Sheik lurked in the shadows of Hyrule, aiding her people while spying on her enemies. However, what Zelda didn't realize was that during this time Sheik was gaining a consciousness of his own, fed by the Triforce of Wisdom as well as the thoughts of the many people who believed in his existence. Over time, Ganondorf heard of this "last of the Sheikah," and his Triforce of Power began to feed Sheik's existence as well.
Once Link woke up from his seven year slumber, Zelda/Sheik began to guide him to each sage. As the two struck up a camaraderie, Link's Triforce of Courage helped give life to Sheik as a separate consciousness. Zelda, realizing that she was sharing her body with another identity, decided that it was best that she drop the disguise; after all, at this point Link had already awakened the sages, so it was time for them to launch a final assault on Ganondorf. But when she went to reveal herself, something strange happened. Sheik separated from Zelda, having gained enough power to manifest his own body. Ganondorf, who was spying on them at the time, used the confusion to seal Zelda into a crystal and carried her away.
The newly "born" Sheik accompanied Link to Ganondorf's castle, where they freed Zelda and Link defeated Ganon. He was sealed away by the sages, and Zelda restored Link to his original time. When she went to see Sheik, however, he had already vanished. Frightened by the thought that Zelda might somehow absorb him back into herself, and desperate to maintain his own existence, Sheik fell back into the shadows, aiding in the rebuilding of Hyrule from a distance. He took up residence in an abandoned house in Kakariko Village. If Zelda knew of his whereabouts, she never acknowledged it.
Personality: Sheik is a reserved, quiet individual, preferring to keep to himself. The many years of hiding from Ganondorf's spies have ingrained in him the habit of being secretive; he doesn't like talking about himself, and for good reason. It's hard to gauge how people will react to learning that you're the magical son-clone of Princess Zelda, after all. The many years of waiting for Link have also taught him to be self-sufficient, which only further enhances his "lone wolf" persona.
Despite his solitary tendencies, he has a desire to help people. While Link was the only one who could defeat Ganondorf, Sheik knew that he couldn't stand by and do nothing as people suffered under the great king of evil's reign. He offers great advice, should people ask him for his opinion, and he's capable of working with people in order to serve the greater good. Sheik is less inclined to view things in black and white than Zelda, so he is capable of doing things that are of a morally questionable nature, if he believes that it will do some good in the end.
Sheik's strongest desire is to be himself. The freedom to move around and simply exist is very precious to him, and he will fight in order to maintain his individuality. His strongest fear is losing himself, be it metaphorically or in the more literal sense of being absorbed back into Zelda. Because he has no idea how he came to be, he's not sure what could trigger this "absorption." This is why he avoids Zelda, and is another reason why he tends to keep to himself.
Preserving Sheikah history is one of his passions. While he may not literally be a Sheikah, he is in many ways Impa's legacy, as she taught many of her people's secrets to Zelda during their seven years of hiding. Sheik considers himself a Sheikah, and can become quite irritated when people suggest otherwise. Always eager to learn more about his mysterious people, he is also eager to share their history and knowledge with those interested -- except for the truly secretive stuff, of course. Because he views himself as a Sheikah, he tends to feel guilty for not guarding Princess Zelda, since his people have always protected the royal people of Hyrule. Were she to need him, he would answer her call, but until then feels that it's best if he stays away from her.
Abilities: Sheik is trained in the art of the Sheikah, who are pretty much Hyrule's answer to badass ninja. He's extremely agile and stealthy, capable of sneaking up on his enemies and ambushing them. He's proficient in hand-to-hand combat and also uses a small blade that looks somewhat like a kogatana. Oh, and he can use Deku nuts to disappear in a flash. Again, badass ninja.
Being a "clone" and not the actual Zelda, Sheik has no access to the Triforce of Wisdom or Hylia's power/memories. He does retain all the memories of Zelda's mortal life, however, and is still a great harp/lyre player. He's not a bad singer, either.
